Evan Goldman is a 13-year-old boy who lives in Manhattan, New York until his life is turned upside down by his parents' divorce. Joining his mom in Appleton, Indiana, he tries desperately to remain friends with Patrice and Archie, while getting the popular kids to come to his bar mitzvah.

Background

It is presumed that Evan had been living in Manhattan, New York his whole life until his dad has an affair with a stewardess and his parents break up. He moves with his mom to Appleton, Indiana and goes to () Middle School.

Relationships

Patrice

Patrice is the first person Evan meets when arriving in Indiana, she pities him for getting dragged away from New York but helps him adjust to Appleton. However, on the first day of class, Evan betrays Patrice by ripping up her invitation to his birthday in front of the popular kids. Archie tries to get Patrice to forgive Evan but fails. Evan tries to make it up to her by inviting her for a movie date but he ends up ignoring her the whole night. She gets upset and thinks that he values his popularity more. They admit their faults and apologize to each other, their friendship goes smoothly from there. While Evan gets humiliated, she comforts him and he then realizes Archie and Patrice are his true friends. During that moment, they kiss and it is implied that they date from that moment on. She and Archie are the only people that attend Evan's bar mitzvah from the whole school.

Archie

After ripping up Patrice's invitation, Evan meets Archie. Archie misses out on a lot due to being on the special needs bus. Archie realizes he can take advantage of Evan since Evan feels bad about Patrice. He tells Evan he can get Patrice to forgive him, under one condition, he gets a date with Kendra or he will ruin his bar mitzvah. Evan calls it a deal and gets him a spot next to Kendra at the movies, but Archie can only sit next to her. Archie breaks that rule during the "date" and leans in for a kiss, Brett coincidentally also leans in for a kiss and they end up kissing each other. Brett gets mad but Kendra isn't completely sure of what was going on. Brett threatens to beat up Archie but then Archie pins the blame on Evan. Everyone gets mad at Evan for ruining their quarterback hero's date. After that, they go to the Dairy Queen and Evan realizes who his true friends are there. Archie ends up being one of the two people that attend Evan's bar mitzvah from the whole school.

Brett

Evan meets Brett and he is nicknamed "The Brain" by him because "he speaks so educated". He tells Evan to get everyone tickets to the Bloodmaster and he'll come to his bar mitzvah. He gets to go to the Bloodmaster bt Archie tries to kiss Kendra which results in Brett losing his temper. Archie pins the blame on Evan which makes Brett upset with him. Lucy also spreads a rumor that Kendra and Evan are together so that makes Brett more upset with him. By the time this happens, Evan realizes who his true friends are and ignore the popular kids.

Kendra

It was spread by Lucy that these two were together behind Brett's back. Kendra didn't know about this, she thought that Evan brought her and Brett back together so she hugs him as a way of saying thank you. Brett catches them hugging and assumes they are cheating. She tries to explain that it's just an act of gratitude but Brett does not listen and he became upset with Evan.

Lucy

It was spread by Lucy that these two were together behind Brett's back. Kendra didn't know about this, she thought that Evan brought her and Brett back together so she hugs him as a way of saying thank you. Brett catches them hugging and assumes they are cheating. She tries to explain that it's just an act of gratitude but Brett does not listen and he became upset with Evan.
